President Trump made a huge embarrassment out of both himself and our country for what feels like the umpteenth time, this time from the stage of the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan. Of course, this isn’t exactly surprising considering the fiasco that was last year’s summit.
However, this time, instead of freaking out and begging aides to bail him out, Trump stood front and center in front of the world and made a complete fool out of himself when he made it clear that he thinks “Western liberalism” literally means liberals that reside on the west coast.
Trump was questioned by The New York Times regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s comments about Western liberalism being “obsolete.” And Trump, in all his ignorant glory, took that to mean actual human beings, that happen to be of the liberal political affiliation, who live on the western coast of the United States.
“He sees what’s going on, I guess, if you look at what’s happening in Los Angeles, where it’s so sad to look, and what’s happening in San Francisco and a couple of other cities, which are run by an extraordinary group of liberal people,” Trump replied to the Times.
“I don’t know what they’re thinking,” he continued. Oblivious to how ignorant he sounds. “But when you look at Los Angeles, when you look at San Francisco, when you look at some of the other cities — and not a lot, not a lot — but you don’t want it to spread.”
Of course, Putin was referring to liberalism in the western world, meaning most of Europe and the United States. In which “liberalism” means individual rights, equality before the law, and democracy and consent to be governed in lieu of a dictatorship, populism, or minority rule — rather than the way Trump took it, as left-leaning, progressive politics in California.
Though, honestly, it’s probably a good thing he did misunderstand. I don’t think I want to know his answer to the real meaning of the question.
