Mike Pence has spent his entire career rallying against the rights of the LGBTQ community — even going so far as supporting the use of federal funding to treat individuals “seeking to change their sexual behavior,” which many people believed was his unspoken way of supporting conversion therapy.
But evidently his blatant homophobia wasn’t enough to prevent the vice president from holding a campaign fundraising event at a private Aspen, Colorado club owned by two gay men, but it could be preventing him from forking over the bill.
The Post Independent reported that Pence’s campaign event was an “intimate” gathering, running couples $35,000 apiece and security for the fundraiser was handled by the Pitkin County Police Department — and according to the Sherriff, Pence has yet to fork over the payment for the services, leaving him to worry that taxpayers may end up eating this Trump administration bill as well.
Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo told the Post Independent, “I’m concerned we’re gonna get stiffed.”
“Usually, by this time, we’re aware of who’s going to pay,” Sherriff DiSalvo continued, who estimates that overtime fees for his deputies come in at around $10,000 to $20,000. “I’ve been trying for a week and I still can’t get anyone to tell me who the Caribou Club host is. So far I’ve been ghosted.”
The Post Independent added, “If the Sheriff’s Office is not reimbursed, Pitkin County will have to foot the bill for the private fundraiser security.”
Several other federal, state and local entities worked security for the VP’s fundraising event, including the U.S. Secret Service, Aspen Police, Aspen Fire, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Parks, and Wildlife, and the U.S. Forest Service — and it’s still unclear as to whether the Trump campaign or the RNC will be reimbursing them as well.
Of course, this is far from the first time that the Trump administration has skipped out on their bill — with Trump most recently owing Washington D.C. a staggering $9 million between his inauguration event and his failed Fourth of July debacle.
Basically, Mike Pence is just fine with using a member of the LGBTQ community to push his agenda, he just doesn’t want to pay for it.
