As the nation mourns the loss of former president George H.W. Bush, Donald Trump is finding himself confronted with his own terrible remarks he’d made about the Bush family. And even in this difficult time for the Bush family, the president didn’t even have the courage or the dignity to give them a response or apologize.

Earlier today at the G20 summit in Argentina, Trump was questioned by reporters. One of them brought up the previous harsh comments the president had made against the Bush family when she asked, “Do you regret any of your comments about Bush or the family in the past?”

The president’s response was disgusting. All Trump did was turn away from the reporter, ignore the question, and end the interview by saying, “Thank you very much everybody.”

It was an absolutely disgusting response to what could have been an opportunity to right his wrongs and extend kindness and peace to the Bush family, but Trump passed it up. Trump’s mockery of the Bush family has been horrific. Just this year, the president was poking fun at Bush’s “a thousand points of light” phrase the former POTUS in his inaugural address. Trump said:

What the hell was that, by the way, thousand points of light? What did that mean? Does anyone know? I know one thing: Make America Great Again, we understand. Putting America first, we understand. Thousand points of light, I never quite got that one.”

The Bush family deserved a dignified response, but Trump made it clear that it’s not going to happen. The Republican Party should be ashamed that this is the way their current president is choosing to honor a well-respected Republican family and former President of the United States.
