Donald Trump has just been served a major embarrassment by his own administration. It has just been confirmed by the White House that former President Barack Obama did NOT tap Trump’s phones at the Trump Tower in 2016, as the president has so aggressively insisted.
In March 2017, Trump accused Obama of wiretapping him in several tweets, one of which said:
Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!”
Three other tweets suggested Obama had broken the law:
Is it legal for a sitting President to be “wire tapping” a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW! I’d bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election! How low has President Obama gone to tapp [sic] my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!
Of course, this was debunked several times and there was no evidence to back up those claims, as there never is with Trump. But the fact that it’s coming from Trump’s White House — again — is super humiliating for Trump. In a 178-page court filing released last night, the Trump administration notes that Trump had lied. The document stated:
The Department of Justice acknowledged, based upon the Congressional testimony of then-FBI Director James B. Comey, that it has no records of alleged wiretapping of then-candidate Trump in Trump Tower by the Obama administration prior to the 2016 presidential election, as referenced in President Trump’s Twitter post on March 4, 2017.”
This basically reiterates the fact that the Trump administration has had it with Trump’s wiretapping claims, and is hoping this issue is never brought up again by the president. It’s clear that the Trump administration wants to move on, but don’t be surprised if our man baby POTUS wants to draw this out on Twitter.
