America is holding its breath as we’re waiting to see just how badly Donald Trump has ruined the Republican Party, as midterms are right around the corner. The Republican Party knows it, too, and they’re either furious or resorting to dirty voter suppression tactics to do damage control.
GOP outrage at Trump isn’t new, though — it’s been a growing movement pretty much since Trump set foot in the White House. Many lifelong Republicans have abandoned ship or condemned Trump for his horrific leadership, and the father of former FBI Director James Comey was one of the earliest to do so publicly.
Comey’s father, J. Brien Comey, has been a Republican his entire life and yet he could not bring himself to support Trump last year — and it had very little to do with the fact that Trump had fired his son for looking into his collusion with Russia. In a heated interview, the former FBI Director’s father told the Bergen Record:
I never was crazy about Trump. I’m convinced that he’s nuts. I thought he belonged in an institution. He was crazy before he became president. Now he’s really crazy.”
Many of Trump’s defenders and fellow Republicans will likely say that the elder Comey’s comments are influenced by the fact that Trump fired his son, but that could not be farther from the truth. In fact, J. Brien Comey specifically stated that he and his son do not talk about his job or work in government, and that his views about the president are his own uninfluenced thoughts. He said:
He and I have an unwritten secret agreement that I don’t talk about his job. It’s just a father-son relationship. We never talk about what he does. I read it in the papers.”
The GOP can’t stand when a rational Republican wants to stand on their own feet and admit that Trump is just batsh*t crazy and unworthy of his role. Of course they will try to blame this on the fact that Trump fired James Comey, but they cannot ignore that many other lifelong Republicans have followed suit in denouncing Trump.
