In a sudden decision Tuesday morning, Donald Trump has given the boot to his national security advisor of a year and a half, John Bolton.

A statement by the President fueled speculation as to whether the dismissal had anything to do with the scrapped plans to meet with Taliban leaders at Camp David, a move that Bolton vociferously opposed:

I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House. I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration, and therefore I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning. I thank John very much for his service. I will be naming a new National Security Advisor next week.”

The statement was, of course, issued via tweet:

Last week, NBC reported that Bolton had, along with Vice President Mike Pence, strenuously opposed the “peace talks” that Trump inexplicably had scheduled with the militant group that harbored Osama bin Laden following 9/11 during the same week as the anniversary of that fateful day.

If, however, Bolton’s firing is associated with his disagreement over the talks with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and the Taliban leaders, it calls into question once more how committed Trump is to retaining Pence himself on the ticket for the 2020 campaign — as Bolton’s primary ally in opposing the Camp David plan was the Vice President.
