In the ongoing whistleblower saga, Donald Trump has been a rudderless dinghy in a windstorm. I hope that paints a picture for you, because it’s very nearly a literal description: His direction is determined entirely by what he thinks are the political winds he should bend to.
In a way, that’s been the story of his entire presidency. But it’s more apparent now, because ignoring the advice of his aides and staffers and setting himself to the wind in the current scandal keeps proving to be so utterly foolish that one has to wonder about the actual sanity or intelligence level of Donald Trump.
So a two-pronged, mutually confirming story between the Times papers of both New York and Los Angeles that the President has decided to retaliate against whoever “gave” the information in the whistleblower’s complaint to the actual whistleblower — whose identity we STILL do not know, and for good reason — fits right in with the portrait of Trump as a flailing boat in a storm.
First, the New York Times scooped the story that Trump, addressing staffers at the United Nations, told the assembled group that he was seeking the identity of the person who “leaked” info to the whistleblower:
I want to know who’s the person who gave the whistle-blower the information because that’s close to a spy. You know what we used to do in the old days when we were smart with spies and treason, right? We used to handle it a little differently than we do now.”
The reference, of course, is to the death penalty, which is the only punishment prescribed by the Constitution for committing treason.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, the Los Angeles Times is reporting that someone actually provided them a recording of the President saying these things. To be clear, it is illegal for Trump to even threaten to retaliate against anyone involved in the whistleblower process, according to the Whistleblower Protection Act. So this is literally Trump breaking the law as he talks about being mad that someone caught him breaking the law.
