Donald Trump has tried everything to shut down Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report, but it looks like the president is giving up and trying to do whatever he can to protect himself from what’s to come.
The Daily Beast has reported that according to two anonymous sources, Trump’s “inner circle” was spoken to in late 2018 about the president’s legal strategy. During that conversation, Trump’s main lawyers, Rudy Giuliani and Jay Sekulow, were told to stick around after Mueller released his report in anticipation of an onslaught of legal issues.
Reporters Asawin Suebsaeng and Erin Banco stated those “conversations served as a private admission that federal investigations bedeviling [Trump’s] first term in office will be haunting him for possibly years to come.”
However, it’s not just Mueller’s report Trump is worried about. Trump and his allies are highly concerned about cases being brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York (SDNY). This involves Trump’s hush money payments with Michael Cohen, as well as many other state crimes, some of which involve Trump family projects and the Trump Foundation.
One of Trump’s allies, former Trump 2016 campaign adviser Michael Caputo, said to the Daily Beast:
I believe the Mueller investigation has always been a part of ‘the resistance,’ designed to stop the president’s agenda by any means necessary. I believe the Southern District of New York is also part of ‘the resistance’—when you see the city of New York and the state of New York joining in on the fun to tie the president’s hands. [And] now that the House is controlled by Democrats and they have initiated innumerable investigations that will tie up the president as well, it is safe for ‘the resistance’ to end the Mueller investigation.”
Caputo also predicted that Trump will need more lawyers:
By my estimation there will be a need for more attorneys, because I expect the harassment to double, if not triple.”
It sounds like Mueller’s report is just the beginning for Trump.
