President Donald Trump gave a speech at the U.S. Airforce Academy commencement ceremony today. As he made his way onto the stage once he was announced, Trump gave his typical smiles, waved to the crowd, and shook hands with several military officers that were attending the event. But in the process of his greetings, he visibly snubbed one person specifically — the Secretary of the Air Force.
Secretary Heather Wilson — who previously served as Congresswoman for New Mexico and boasts the title of the first woman to command basic training, as well as the first woman Vice Wing Commander — didn’t receive any recognition from the president, who is reportedly “irked” at her according to a report from Foreign Policy magazine because she came out against Donald’s “space force.”
It seems that even after Wilson’s resignation from her position, and her long association with the president, Trump still has his feelings hurt that that the secretary of the Air Force wasn’t quick to jump on his alien train.
An administration official told Foreign Policy, “Some senior officials know how to disagree with [the president] without being disagreeable to him. Heather Wilson hasn’t managed to do that. Her opposition to the Space Force has grated on him and I think he permanently sees her as troublesome and ineffective now.”
Wilson was eventually recognized from the podium by the Superintendent of the Air Force Academy, Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria. But that does nothing to negate the blatant immaturity and childishness displayed by our president. As the leader of our country, personal matters should be set aside in situations such as this and we should always show a united front. Instead, I’m sure we’ll all soon be subject to yet another Trump Twitter tantrum about how Wilson made him big mad, so she doesn’t deserve a handshake.
