News has just broken that there will be a one week delay on confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court so that investigations can take place. Donald Trump, who has spent several days of his presidency attacking Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and all the other women who have accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault, has just reacted to the news.
After hearing that his Supreme Court pick would be delayed, Trump spoke to reporters during a pool spray in the Oval Office, and his response was a bit surprising to all in attendance. Reacting to the fact that Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) had called for a week-long delay so an FBI investigation could be done, Trump said this:
Whatever they think is necessary.”
Trump also praised Ford’s Senate Judiciary Committee testimony in a rare show of support:
I thought her testimony was very compelling, and she looks like a very fine woman to me. Very fine woman. And I thought that Brett’s, likewise, was really something that I hadn’t seen before. It was an incredible moment, I think, in the history of our country. But certainly she was a very credible witness. She was very good in many respects.”
This has stunned Americans around the country, as the majority of us expected Trump to fly off the handle (although that could still happen, to be fair). Of course, Trump shouldn’t be given too much credit for this, because he has supported Ford before and later turned around and trashed her on Twitter. Trump’s comments about Ford and the rest of the Kavanaugh accusers have been back and forth, so we can’t trust the president’s comments as being genuine. However, they are much less unhinged than we all thought they’d be.
