Donald Trump got publicly humiliated during his recent United Nations speech when he claimed that his administration had accomplished more than any other — and the entire audience burst out in laughter. Trump seemed extremely embarrassed and surprised by that response, and it was evident in the way he tried to laugh it off. Now, because the president’s pride has been hurt, he’s sending out his minions to try and reframe what happened.
Earlier today, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley went on Fox News to defend the president, and tried to convince everyone that the United Nations General Assembly had been laughing at Trump’s speech because they “respect” him and “loved his honesty.” Come on. Anyone who saw that clip knows that’s not even close to being true! Nevertheless, Haley tried her best to make it work, humiliating herself in the process. She said:
They loved how honest he is. It’s not diplomatic and they find it funny. … When he goes and he is very truthful, they kind of were taken back by it.
All day yesterday, they were falling over themselves to get a picture with him, to talk about how great his speech was. They love that he’s honest with them and they’ve never seen anything like it, so there’s respect there. I saw that the media was trying to make it something disrespectful. That’s not what it was ― they love to be with him.”
Is Haley serious? Even the hosts at Fox News seemed kind of reluctant to get on board with the fact that she’s literally trying to convince them that the United Nations audience was laughing at Trump out of “respect.” Everyone knows Trump hasn’t accomplished anything to brag about during his presidency — and he was rightfully mocked for trying to claim that.
