Donald Trump has been priming his rabid supporters since his presidential campaign to be die-hard fans of keeping immigrants out of the country — so when he decided to flip-flop on closing the Southern border, we all knew that his fans were going to be in an uproar.
Of course, at this time in his abysmal presidency, Trump can’t afford to lose any of his fan base — especially now that he is gearing up for 2020. With many of his original supporters dropping off, Trump knows he needs to retain as many of them as possible and do his best to not piss them off. So, in order to hide the fact that he completely took back his own threat, Trump tried to make himself look less bad by defending his decision. Unfortunately, the excuse he gave isn’t going to work very well.
Trump stated that his decision not to close the Southern border was because Mexico has “been very, very good” over the past four days to protect its own Southern border. Did Trump really believe his supporters would go for this?! Pro-Trumpers don’t give a damn about Mexico being able to protect its own border — they want racism, brutality, and to be able to sleep at night knowing that America is going to stay just as white as it was the day before!
Trump announced this pathetic excuse outside the White House this morning, where he tried to save face by saying:
I never changed my mind at all. I may shut it down at some point, but I’d rather do tariffs. So Mexico, I have to say, has been very, very good — you know that — over the last four days, since I talked about shutting down the border. If they continue that, everything will be fine. If they don’t we’re going to tariff their cars at 25 percent coming into the United States.”
What Trump has done is severely underestimate just how much his supporters expect him to be unforgiving and heartless when it comes to Mexico and immigration. This might be a major blow to his fanbase, and he clearly doesn’t know it yet. You can watch the video below:
