You’ve heard the name of the group on the periphery of the news: Turning Point USA — a conservative group for those young people they have lured in with memes and appeals to parent-groomed racism and homophobia — and their intrepid leader, Charlie Kirk, have become somewhat of a voice in American politics, despite being ostensibly really bad at understanding politics, history, civics, and sometimes even basic humanity. Kirk has a record of challenging people to debates and then promptly losing them, and of badly misunderstanding events and even forms of government.
Apparently, however, even their A/V team is pretty bad at their jobs, and one of their highest-profile gatherings to date — a forum at which the President himself was a guest speaker — was ground zero for a flub of epic proportions.
Trump, of course, can’t stay away from TPUSA, drawn in by the legions of adoring youngsters who are loyal to him. There is perhaps nothing Donald Trump loves more than having fans, except perhaps having the opportunity to sleep with one of them should the occasion arise.
But some enterprising young person in charge of the optics behind the President during a speech he delivered to the group on Tuesday either isn’t actually a fan of Trump or is the poster child for hiring seasoned teams to put on political events, rather than groups of kids who really like a racist sexual predator.
Behind Trump as he spoke, what appeared to be the official Seal of the President of the United States was being shown on a giant screen. But upon closer inspection, it turns out that the seal was a Photoshopped version, swapping out some key elements:
- The eagle in the altered version has two heads
- The flag is both not in the familiar “shield” shape and is also inexplicably adorned with the Soviet symbol of the hammer and sickle
- Rather than clutching arrows in its left foot and an olive branch in its right, the eagle’s talons are gripping a set of golf clubs and a wad of cash
- Perhaps most importantly, the Latin E pluribus unum — “out of many, one” — is missing, replaced by the Spanish phrase 45 es un titere — “45 is a puppet”
The “mistake” was first reported by the Washington Post, with an unnamed spokesperson telling reporters that they “can’t figure out where the breakdown was.”
Charlie Kirk has yet to address the fake image on his social media account, and Trump seems not to have noticed yet.
