Things in Donald Trump’s White House are more chaotic than ever — especially after today.
It’s been reported that there was a screaming match in the West Wing between Trump’s chief of staff John Kelly and national security adviser John Bolton over the increased number of border crossings. Two sources familiar with what transpired told CNN that this argument between the two aides has been going on for weeks, and had apparently reached a breaking point.
This happened partly because Trump decided to take Bolton’s side in the argument, as Bolton believes there should be a harder approach. In his argument, he criticized Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and said she needed to do her job — which infuriated Kelly because Nielsen used to be his deputy when he was in charge of DHS.
How Trump’s White House has decided to respond to the tense event speaks volumes for where the administration is at right now. In the aftermath, Trump has denied that he knew anything about the argument, despite the fact that those sources say he was definitely present. Trump said to reporters this afternoon, “I’ve not heard about it. No.”
White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders also lied and insisted that her colleagues are “not angry at one another” and then tried to somehow blame it on Democrats. She said:
While we are passionate about solving the issue of illegal immigration, we are not angry at one another. However, we are furious at the failure of Congressional Democrats to help us address this growing crisis. They should be ashamed for pushing an open borders agenda and are only doing this for strictly political reasons. Despite us having the worst laws in the world and no help from Democrats, our Administration is doing a great job on the border.”
The shouting match between Kelly and Bolton was heard by several aides, and it was reported that there were whispers in the West Wing that one of the men might resign over the disagreement – which the White House also denies.
It’s impossible to know what’s going to happen in Trump’s administration from one moment to the next, but if one of the men resigns it might just be Kelly because the president has sided with Bolton.
