When Donald Trump became President of the United States, most of us were terrified. Some, however, were hopeful that once that the campaign drama was over, the former reality TV star would leave his childish antics behind and turn into the POTUS conservatives wanted him to be.
Well, that didn’t happen. Trump’s unpresidential behavior has followed him on and offline, regardless of whether he is in the United States or not. One area we really needed Trump to put on a good face (or at least act like he gave a damn) was in front of other world leaders, and he has failed every single time. The president’s summit with Vladimir Putin was a disaster, as was Trump’s behavior with our allies during the NATO and G-7 Summits. But when we look at Trump’s track record, we’re foolish to expect anything different.
A moment that perfectly communicates that America should know better by now was the president’s first trip overseas. Not only did Trump prove, once again, that he has no idea what he’s doing or how the world works, but he pissed off several world leaders and ruined America’s standing with its allies (which still happens). Foreign policy experts also thought the whole thing was a disgrace, and what Trump’s own State Department official said proves it.
In an interview with the Daily Beast, an anonymous State Department official had some blistering criticism for Trump after witnessing how the clueless POTUS behaved during his first foreign tour. This official stated that Trump was acting like a “drunk tourist” in Europe — likely referencing the humiliating incident where Trump blasted NATO allies for not paying their share on defense (which he is still whining about). The official said of Trump’s behavior:
Loud and tacky, shoving his way around the dance floor. He steps on others without realizing it. It’s ineffectual.”
One may recall this infamous viral video, in which Trump shoved his way to the front of the group of NATO leaders, pushing Prime Minister Dusko Markovic Of Montenegro out of the way like an impatient toddler. No video represents Trump better than this:
Donald Trump is absolutely incapable of any sort of presidential behavior, and this account from a State Department official serves as a reminder. Trump sticks out like a sore thumb among other world leaders, and sadly not much has changed since this incident last year.
