Donald Trump might have to make one of the hardest decisions of his life soon – to watch or not to watch Fox News. It’s bad enough that the network has become increasingly critical of the president thanks to his many f*ck ups, but his BFF Fox host Sean Hannity is thinking of leaving the network – and if he does, Trump will have to choose.
According to a Vanity Fair analysis of what goes on behind closed doors at Fox News, it’s reported that Hannity has been telling friends that he intends to leave the network once his contract expires in 2021. This is because Hannity is furious with the Murdochs, who are in charge of the network, because he doesn’t think they are loyal enough to Trump. One of Hannity’s fellow Fox colleagues said:
Sean doesn’t feel supported. He has no relationship with Lachlan [Murdoch]. Sean thinks, Wait a second, I was hired to get ratings and I get ratings, but now people are embarrassed about me? He feels Fox spends a lot of time supporting Shepard Smith but his show makes no money. That’s annoying to him.”
Another colleague at Fox News said that Hannity “told Trump last year that the Murdochs hate Trump, and Hannity is the only one holding Fox together.” Oh boy.
It’s no secret that Fox News is in a tough place right now (and it’s only the network’s own fault). On one hand, the network has to cater to the president and his rabid fanbase, because that’s where Fox’s Republican viewers are. But on the other hand, Trump’s fanbase is getting smaller and smaller and by catering to them the network alienates mainstream advertisers who don’t want to be associated with far-right nuts like Hannity or the president.
If Hannity quits, Trump might actually be forced to do his job since he can’t binge on Fox.
