While Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) used to be considered as one of the most outspoken critics of Donald Trump, things have certainly changed over the last few months. Once looked upon by one of the only somewhat level-headed Republicans left in the GOP, Graham jumped off the deep end and isn’t showing any signs of coming out of his Trump coma — and today he told America that he’s willing to defend the president even though he knows Trump lies.
In an interview with Fox News host Neil Cavuto, Graham was all too forgiving and eager to push the president’s scandals under the rug. When Cavuto asked Graham “Do you believe everything the president has said on these subjects,” referencing the president’s Russia and sex scandals, Graham acknowledged that Trump lied. Graham said:
No. He is always under siege. He is saying this one minute and that the next. It’s what he does that matters. He is like every other person. Bill Clinton lied about having sexual relationships with that woman. I voted against that article of impeachment because I think most people would lie to protect their family.”
That’s interesting coming from someone in the Republican Party when the GOP claims to care about “family values” so much. Graham only made things worse by further defending Trump’s lies about his affairs:
I’m the one Republican to vote against that article of impeachment because I think the average person in that circumstance would be compelled to lie. Did Trump do some of this? I don’t know, but I think I would at least understand it. Lying about sex wasn’t enough for me then and it’s not enough now.”
So basically Graham is fine with Trump’s lies on his numerous scandals, as long as there’s a good, understandable reason to lie. Does the GOP have ANY morals anymore?
