Donald Trump is currently painting himself as a victim who was targeted unfairly by the FBI, but former FBI special agent Clint Watts told a very different story today on MSNBC.
In speaking with host Hallie Jackson, Watts stated that Trump’s behavior was so alarming and suspicious at the time that he fired former FBI Director James Comey that the FBI was pretty much left with no choice but to investigate the president. Given Trump’s constant unhinged and bizarre behavior, that’s pretty believable.
Watts also pointed out several “alarm bells” such as Trump’s public statements about Russia right after he fired Comey and the president’s reported statement to Russian officials that there was a “great pressure” off him now that Comey was out of the way. Considering all of that, officials at the Department of Justice and FBI would have been failing the country if they DIDN’T investigate. Watts explained:
He kept interjecting Russia into the discussions. He did it with Lester Holt on NBC News. He brought it up to Rod Rosenstein. If you look at this, just from a counterintelligence perspective as an FBI agent, there are alarm bells all the way through that 18-month period leading up to this moment. So what were they supposed to do?”
Watts also stated that Trump’s continued opposition of his own intelligence agencies combined with his defense of Russian President Vladimir Putin had also set off many red flags. He said:
The president does not believe the intelligence community, does not rely on them for his information, and instead goes to our enemies, our opponents overseas and uses their information to gain his perspective. It is not just troubling — it is dangerous.”
Exactly. Trump is no victim – he was investigated for good reason and he brought it upon himself. You can watch Watts’ interview below:
