Donald Trump made a major mistake by making his huge, racist border wall the cornerstone of his presidential campaign — and he made it worse by saying that another country, Mexico, would pay for it. Now he’s under pressure from his rabid supporters to deliver while the rest of us are pissed at him for shutting down the government over something so stupid. Trump is getting it from both sides now, and just when it seems like it couldn’t get any worse for the unworthy president, it does.
It turns out that even if Trump did find a way to get funding for his wall, he’s going to have a hell of a time trying to find someone who will build it. Miami real estate tycoon Jorge Perez was asked by Trump to help him build the border wall, and in a recent interview, Perez told everyone how he really felt:
The wall is the most idiotic thing I’ve ever seen or heard in my life. A wall for what? You think a wall is going to stop people that are hungry? Good employment in Mexico, economic growth in Mexico, equality is going to stop people from coming over the border.”
Perez, who was raised in Colombia, is now a billionaire who has previously built Trump towers in Florida. According to Perez, Trump had emailed him after winning the election and asked him if he’d be interested in working on the wall. Perez stated that he declined Trump’s offer and later joked with the president about which side of the wall he’d be on.
While Perez may have been civil when speaking with Trump back then, he let the president know his true feelings in that more recent interview. Perez also stated that Trump had approached him to serve as undersecretary of housing and urban development under Ben Carson. However, Perez turned it down because he was “dramatically opposed” to Trump’s immigration and trade policies.
Just like all the empty spots in Trump’s administration, no one wants to be the one to kill their career by building Trump’s wall, either.
