The vote on Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is currently taking place, a day after a long hearing in which Kavanaugh was grilled over the numerous sexual assault allegations that have been made against him.
While the vote was taking place, a powerful moment was caught on camera as several Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee walked out of the vote in protest, sending America an important message in the differences in morale between the Republican and Democratic Party. CNN’s Manu Raju reported that Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) led the walkout and was followed by Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI), adding to the stunning display of support for the women who said they have suffered at the hands of Kavanaugh.
This was extremely embarrassing and damaging to the Republican Party, and they tried to hide it. During the walkout, it was reported that Committee chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) wanted this moment to remain unseen and that he actually yelled at photographers for capturing the protest. Grassley said:
Hey, you folks that are photographers know that you’re supposed to sit down. Maybe you just ought to leave the room if you don’t know what the rules are.”
Of course a Republican would want to hide the fact that Democrats actually care about women (unlike the GOP) and are willing to stand up against what is wrong unlike spineless conservatives.
Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court has been controversial from the moment Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, the first woman to accuse him of sexual assault, came forward. The president, following a pattern of defending men who molest women, continued to stand behind him and even attacked his accusers. This amazing move by Democrats may be the only reminder that there are still decent people in politics, even when it looks so bleak.
