The Republican Party must KNOW it’s screwing up just by the number of former presidents that have had to come forward and speak out against them. Regardless of any affiliation with political parties, we’ve seen former presidents from both sides of the table condemn the foolishness they see, giving the GOP desperate warnings to get their act together.
Most recently, 94-year-old former POTUS Jimmy Carter was forced to speak out in the Georgia governor’s race due to the disgusting, unethical behavior of Republican candidate Brian Kemp. Carter has just made a personal appeal to Kemp, calling on him to resign. Carter made this demand of Kemp in an Oct. 22 letter, which the Associated Press has obtained, after there have been charges against Kemp for attempted voter suppression and voter fraud.
Kemp, who is Georgia’s chief elections officer and clearly doesn’t respect the conflict of interest in running for governor, has refused to take Democratic concerns seriously and has every intention of keeping his role. In his letter to Kemp, Carter wrote not as a Democrat, but as someone who cares about the integrity of the country’s electoral process:
One of the key requirements for a fair and trusted process is that there be nonbiased supervision of the electoral process, would be a sign that you recognize the importance of this key democratic principle and want to ensure the confidence of our citizens in the outcome.”
While it’s uncertain if Kemp has read the letter, it seems as though Kemp and his team are avoiding it. A spokeswoman for Kemp’s office referred questions to his campaign, which has not responded either.
However, Kemp has addressed other calls for his resignation. In a recent debate with his Democratic opponent, Stacey Adams, Kemp stated that one of his Democratic predecessors was able to run for governor without resigning (however that person, Cathy Cox, had not won the Democratic nomination).
The charges against Kemp are serious. Currently, Kemp’s office is being scrutinized for holding up 53,000 voter registrations — which Kemp has tried to justify by stating he is just following strict Georgia laws for voters.
It’s easy to see that there is a major conflict of interest in Kemp trying to run for governor, and he’s trying to use his position in the electoral process to make things work in his favor. Hopefully, Carter’s letter will raise more awareness and put pressure on Kemp to do the right thing.
