Donald Trump is on a tear about his BFF Brett “Boofs and Beers” Kavanaugh today, after the publication of new allegations against the Supreme Court Justice in the New York Times over the weekend.
It seems that the right wing has latched on to a correction that the paper issued to their original story, which detailed not only the investigative work done to corroborate the story of Deborah Ramirez, whose claims went ignored by the FBI during Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings — at the direction of the GOP-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee.
After the nation’s top law enforcement agency was commanded to limit the scope of their investigation by then-Chairman Chuck Grassley, Ramirez was essentially silenced, although there were more than two dozen witnesses offered to the FBI to back up her account.
But the Times did its own investigation, which resulted in the publication of the allegations in full, and Republicans went nuts, most of all Donald Trump.
The President can ill afford to have his singular achievement — the nomination and confirmation of two Justices — questioned on the basis of Kavanaugh’s character or possible misdeeds, since that would paint Trump himself as a bad judge of character who does not, after all, only hire “the best people.”
But after the publication of the story, the Times added a correction to one corroborative story: Another woman was said to have been victimized in basically the same way as Ramirez, but did not remember her situation. Ramirez herself remembers clearly the act of Kavanaugh putting his penis in her face at a party; the second, unnamed woman does not remember Kavanaugh having his penis pushed into her hand on a different occasion, although a number of witnesses present do remember it.
The correction said:
An earlier version of this article, which was adapted from a forthcoming book, did not include one element of the book’s account regarding an assertion by a Yale classmate that friends of Brett Kavanaugh pushed his penis into the hand of a female student at a drunken dorm party. The book reports that the female student declined to be interviewed and friends say that she does not recall the incident. That information has been added to the article.”
Right-wing Twitter — and the President himself — have deliberately misconstrued this as Ramirez recanting her own allegation, rather than acknowledging that this is only the other victim that declined to be interviewed.
Trump, in fact, has now called for the resignations of everyone involved with the article:
I call for the Resignation of everybody at The New York Times involved in the Kavanaugh SMEAR story, and while you’re at it, the Russian Witch Hunt Hoax, which is just as phony! They’ve taken the Old Grey Lady and broken her down, destroyed her virtue and ruined her reputation…

…She can never recover, and will never return to Greatness, under current Management. The Times is DEAD, long live The New York Times!

Of course, nothing in the story was a “smear” and is supported by all necessary evidence, as Trump and the Republicans are fully aware. You’ll note, however, that he didn’t just grasp onto the right-wing lies about the Ramirez account, he had to add his own “hoax” complaint as well, about the Russia investigation.
If only Trump understood that everyone who knows he’s lying about Kavanaugh now knows for certain that he’s lying about Russia as well.
