At this point in Donald Trump’s presidency, it is absolutely insane that he has supporters who actually believe he’s going to follow through with anything. The president has caved or gone back on his promises time after time, and he’s about to do it with his government shutdown.
Trump has been using this shutdown as a way to bully Democrats into supporting his terrible, racist border wall — and has been saying his shutdown could continue on for “months,” even “years” in order to show how tough and powerful he is. But it turns out that not even three weeks into this shutdown, Trump is showing real signs of weakness.
A new report by the Wall Street Journal states that Trump may be looking for a way to back out of his government shutdown, and he’s turning to his aides to help him find a way to get out of this mess without looking weak.
The Journal reported that Trump met with several congressional and White House officials over the weekend, and there were discussions about how to secure federal funding for the president’s wall. During this discussion, Trump reportedly asked his aides to devise a plan that will let him reopen the government without making him look like he’s caving to Democrats:
During a private meeting with aides at Camp David on Sunday, Mr. Trump said he wanted them to come up with a resolution to the shutdown fight that would reopen the government without him appearing to have capitulated to Democrats, a person familiar with the meeting said.
The thing is, Trump has put himself in such a position thanks to his unhinged tweets and public statements, that he will be unable to save his “reputation” no matter how his aides spin this. And considering that Trump is addressing the nation on his border wall tomorrow night, there isn’t much time for him to figure it out. Once again, Trump’s incompetence will sink him.
