Donald Trump has pretty much lost any leverage he might have had to get his border wall funded when he agreed to reopen the government without any funds allocated to his border wall. Now, the only threat he can really make is to declare a national emergency, and that is also being blown up by Democrats.
Earlier today, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) gave Trump a brutal reality check stating that Trump cannot declare a national emergency thanks to new testimony from top U.S. intelligence officials like Dan Coats. Schiff argued that this testimony would “undermine” Trump’s ability to use a national emergency to get money for his wall. In an interview on MSNBC, Schiff explained:
The fact that none of the intel chiefs brought up a threat at the southern border as being one of the most pressing threats facing the country, that could be Exhibit A in a challenge to any kind of a declaration of a national emergency.”
Schiff is referring to testimony that happened yesterday, in which the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Dan Coats and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director Gina Haspel spoke about global threats to the U.S. — and neither of them mentioned the border. Instead, matters such as ISIS, China, and Russia were top priority.
Schiff stated that the testimony proved that “none of the intelligence agencies think” there is an “emergency” at the border. He said:
I think, if anything, it is going to undermine that legal case that the president may try to make, that hearing yesterday could be a central exhibit.”
Many people are well aware that Trump has completely fabricated an immigration crisis to get his racist border wall, even though it has been proven to be an extremely expensive, ineffective way to respond to illegal immigration concerns. Schiff’s comments prove that all Trump has are his lies to stand on, and the Democrats will not allow him to bully them into giving him funding for his disastrous wall.
