Attorney, author and Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz has recently been making waves thanks to recent developments in the many investigations of Donald Trump. While promoting his new book, “The Case Against Impeaching Trump,” Dershowitz did an interview with Salon to speak about how the president could be impeached immediately.

Dershowitz stated that within the parameters of the U.S. Constitution, Trump’s actions could be impeachable “only if you can demonstrate that he or she has committed a specified crime — treason, perjury, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.” However, Dershowitz warned that if those crimes cannot be proven, “impeachment becomes an unconstitutional process.”

While Dershowitz has been known for defending Trump’s right to not be impeached, the attorney stated that a proven crime would obviously change this. Dershowitz said, “If he commits a crime, he’s not going to be able to count on my defense.” He said:

If he or the next president is impeached for something that isn’t a crime, I’m going to stand up for him the same way I stood up for Bill Clinton and probably Andrew Johnson … I even defended Nixon’s civil liberties, even though I strongly supported his impeachment.”

In a statement that now seems highly ironic due to the recent explosive evidence against Trump that came via secret tapes that his former attorney Michael Cohen recorded, Dershowitz continued:

He committed impeachable crimes. He paid hush money, he told his people to lie to government officials, he destroyed evidence. Those are crimes – real obstruction of justice – and I would support any president’s impeachment if they committed a misdemeanor or high crime.”

On Cohen’s tapes, Trump can be heard talking about a hush money payment to a woman who claimed to have an affair with him. In the tape, Trump is heard saying the words “pay with cash” — which is extremely incriminating evidence against him and blows up the lies Trump’s legal team was using as a defense, as they tried to pin the “pay with cash” idea on Cohen.

Dershowitz might have intended to defend Trump, but thanks to recent evidence what he said actually proves that Trump is guilty of the high crimes that should lead to impeachment.
