Now that Donald Trump has caved to the Democrats and agreed to reopen the government without any funding for his racist border wall, the president is scheduled to give his delayed State of the Union address tomorrow night — and the details of what he’s doing to say have been leaked.
It seems that at this point in his presidency, it would be hard for Trump to say anything worse than he already has. However, Trump always manages to surprise America. According to Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway, Trump “is going to call for an end to the politics of resistance, retribution, and call for more comity” — which will only solidify feelings that Trump wants to be a dictator so his power can go completely unchecked.
During her interview, Conway made Trump’s SOTU goal perfectly clear as she spelled out “comity” and explained that the word means “courtesy and considerate behavior toward others.” While that’s hilarious considering that Trump definitely won’t be practicing what he preaches, it’s quite terrifying to think that Trump is practically trying to discourage reporters from doing their jobs and fact-checking him.
During Conway’s interview, a reporter asked, “Does resistance mean if you resist the president or question him?” Conway responded with a lie:
Not at all. He’s calling for cooperation and he’s calling for comity —c-o-m-i-t-y —and also compromise.”
We all know that Trump is not capable of handing back the respect that he demands is given to him. The president clearly wants reporters to go easier on him now, and who knows what he will do to the press in order to make that happen. Already, the president has taken to banning reporters and revoking their press passes. He has even called for violence against journalists. Trump needs a lesson in “comity” much more than the press does.
