Anyone living in North Carolina should be boycotting the president for this.

Donald Trump and his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, have a history of responding to national disasters with extreme insensitivity. These two are tone deaf beyond belief and oblivious to their privilege and lack of empathy. That’s why Trump’s response to Hurricane Florence today should surprise no one, and yet it’s so awful that we can’t believe it happened.

Earlier today, Trump visited North Carolina as the state tries to recover from the devastating damage from Hurricane Florence. During a press conference, Trump couldn’t have been in a more ignorant mood considering the heavy, somber details about how the storm ravaged the state.

As if he was completely unaware of how horrifying the conditions really were and all the victims the hurricane claimed, Trump was smiling and telling jokes, praising the weather. Trump said at one point during the press conference:

Some of the hard work is taking place right now. Even though it’s nice and beautiful and sunny.”

Absolutely revolting. You can watch this moment below:

And that’s not all. Trump also bragged about the hurricane with some very insensitive phrases, calling it “epic” and “hard to believe.”

Trump continues his inappropriate cheerfulness throughout the conference and even joked with his new BFF Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) at one point. Trump saw his golf buddy at the conference and started joking around:

Oh, look at Lindsey! Lindsey, do you want to pull up a chair? What happened to you?”

As you can see, there’s not much work being done about how Trump is going to fix the damage and help North Carolina recover after Hurricane Florence. When he finally got tired of cracking jokes and ignoring the real issues, all Trump could do was make this empty promise:

The money is going to be a lot, but it’s going to come as fast as you need it. We’ll take care of everybody.”

To the people of North Carolina, we are terribly sorry. You deserve better.
