It seems like one of the most important things in Donald Trump’s day to day existence, and maybe you know some people like this, is that he really, really prefers to be right. About everything.
We here at DC Tribune understand that need. We strive for it ourselves.
But hanging on to something well after the fact, insisting that you were right and everyone else was wrong, and padding the story with even more lies to make it sound like anyone who doesn’t believe you must be an idiot — that’s not presidential. That’s something a middle-schooler might do.
Yet here we are, looking at tape from Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania from Thursday night, and we can’t help but notice that he revisited a topic many had considered long dead, his visit to meet Queen Elizabeth. He called it, in fact, “one more of those crazy stories,” which is exactly how we might expect anyone to refer to a visit with the monarch of a foreign ally.
Once again, he mangled what the country is called:
I have great respect for the UK, the United Kingdom. Great respect. People call it Britain, they call it Great Britain, they call it — they used to call it England, different parts.”
This is not a good start to one more of those crazy stories, Donald. Here’s a handy guide for anyone who’s having the same trouble as Mr. Trump with what that country is called:
- England is one country. There are other countries on the island, but England is the only one named England.
- Great Britain is three countries — England, Scotland, and Wales, and they’re all on the same island.
- The United Kingdom is all of that, plus Northern Ireland.
Then Donald Trump called the Queen of England a liar.
I mean, he didn’t say that outright. But he did insist that all of the reports that he was late were simply being put out by the “fake news,” despite the fact that the entire world saw footage of the Queen on a stage by herself, checking her watch.
Now, if Trump had simply said “I wasn’t late — the Queen was early,” that would actually line up with what some news outlets have reported: That his motorcade arrived seconds before he was scheduled to be there and that Queen Elizabeth was just eager to get things underway (and perhaps over with). That is definitely not what he said, though:
I landed, I’m on the ground and I’m waiting with the King’s and the Queen’s guards — wonderful people. I’m waiting. I was about 15 minutes early and I’m waiting with my wife and that’s fine. Hey, it’s the Queen, right? We can wait. But I’m a little early.”
Ladies and gents, that’s your president saying it was actually HIM waiting on HER because SHE was late. Now this guy is making me doubt myself. Maybe we should check the tape:
No, that’s definitely Queen Elizabeth and even some other guy with her, both checking their watches while on a stage that Donald Trump is definitely not on.
Maybe the mix-up was that Trump thought he was supposed to go to Windsor Castle in the UK, but the Queen meant Windsor Castle in England.
Watch Trump lie to his supporters about the “fake, fake, disgusting news” who dared to report that he was late:
