Melania and Donald Trump landed in the UK this morning for their 3-day state visit and arrived at the Buckingham Palace shortly after where they were ceremonially welcomed by the Queen, Prince Charles, and Camilla. While we definitely expected the Trumps to fuck things up while they’re visiting, we didn’t really expect them to do so quite so soon. Yet, here they are, breaking all of their previous fuck up records when neither Donald nor Melania bowed or curtsied to the senior royals, breaking the longstanding tradition.
Instead of the traditional bow and curtsy to show respect for the royal family, Trump and Melania opted for handshakes, just like they did last year for their previous visit.
According to the Royal Family’s official website, which states “There are no obligatory codes of behavior when meeting the Queen or a member of the Royal Family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms,” the Trumps didn’t technically break any rules, per se — they just broke tradition and didn’t show the respect that the senior royals deserve.
The royal family website official guidelines go on to further explain what is a traditional greeting:
“For men, this is a neck bow (from the head only) whilst women do a small curtsy. Other people prefer simply to shake hands in the usual way.”
As expected, Twitter had a lot to say about Trump’s chosen greeting of the royal seniors:
What about a curtsy Malarnia
