Donald Trump and the GOP are really going to regret the fact that they’re rape apologists who continue to harbor and defend misogynists — because women (and much of America) are no longer having it and staying silent.
The last few days have been full of mounting accusations, a powerful testimony by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s sexual assault accuser Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, followed by a controversial hearing where Kavanaugh pretty much exposed his guilt. And yet, the president and many fellow Republicans continued to rally behind Kavanaugh, until Senator Jeff Flake (R) had to guts to call for a voting delay so that an FBI investigation could occur, providing a tiny glimmer of hope that this country still has some decency.
There might be more where that came from. Last night, CNN commentator and White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks April Ryan made a powerful statement about the future of Kavanaugh’s confirmation. When Bill Maher asked Ryan if Americans were being “hopeful for no reason” by thinking that Trump’s Supreme Court pick might not be confirmed, Ryan offered a surprising bit of information – she said that according to her sources, Kavanaugh might not actually get his SCOTUS seat. She said:
From all the reporting and the sourcing that I’m getting, this is a moment in history where Brett Kavanaugh could actually may lose this nomination, may lose the confirmation. It’s how things are lining up.”
Wow. Ryan also stated that the FBI investigation is a “limited scope,” but that it might “take a little while longer” if they “uncover something.” She continued:
The White House today is having a hard time with this because they’re trying to find out one. when did he know this happened? When did he know of this? And what did he know? Two. he was more involved in the Ken Starr stuff than he led on. And he was more involved with Vince Foster and all of that.”
Ryan insisted that this issue was way bigger than politics. Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation — or the nixing of it — was about “humanity.” She said:
Many women cried and sobbed with her, they believed her. Even the president of the United States, who doesn’t even want to acknowledge his own accusers said she was credible. That’s saying something.”
Ryan ended her comments with an ominous warning to the Republican Party. She said that if the FBI uncovers something, “you can’t have a vote next Friday.”
This is truly a powerful moment and could set the stage for what’s to come for Kavanaugh and the GOP. You can watch Ryan below:
