Donald Trump promised the Republican Party that he would work really hard for them in the midterms, as they are now in danger of being completely squashed by Democratic candidates. He even said he would campaign “six or seven” days per week in order to help conservative candidates dominate in the midterm elections. But now that Trump is hitting the campaign trail, GOPers are horrified.
It looks like Republicans are waking up to the fact that Trump’s “help” is the exact opposite. It’s actually WORSE. Conservative insiders who have been watching the president’s speeches at the rallies of Republican candidates are becoming extremely worried that Trump’s presence is actually going to negatively impact GOP votes – because the president is far more enamored with talking about himself than the local candidates he is supposed to be promoting.
Axios reported that GOP operatives have recognized that Trump’s self-serving, rambling rants are overshadowing the candidates he has endorsed. The Associated Press also recognized this:
[Trump is] casting himself as the star of the midterms, eagerly inserting himself into hotly contested primaries, headlining rallies in pivotal swing states and increasing his fundraising efforts for Republicans.”
Basically, Republicans are finally seeing that Trump’s ego is getting in the way. After seeing Trump perform at an Ohio rally on Saturday, a GOP operative called it “a perfect example” of Trump’s failure to be helpful to candidates. He said:
Instead of attacking [Democrat] Danny O’Connor he’s attacking King James [popular NBA star LeBron James]. Are we talking about the economy or whether we need ICE?”
Another GOP official said this:
He could easily be very helpful but has no interest in staying on message.”
I don’t know why it took this long for the GOP to wake up and recognize that Trump is hurting more than helping, but it looks like this moment has finally arrived – and it could mean big trouble for Trump.
