In the wake of the ongoing investigation into Trump’s involvement with Russian interference in the 2016 election, it’s hard not to notice that the probe that Trump constantly refers to as a “witch hunt” sure has produced a lot of witches. From “coffee boys” like George Papadopoulos to longtime political operatives like Paul Manafort and Roger Stone, the Special Counsel has torn its way through Donald Trump’s entire apparatus, leaving no stone unturned.
In fact, with the news that a subpoena may be on the horizon for the alleged source of the infamous “pee tape,” the public has been more than a little bemused at just how many of Trump’s associates have gone the way of the prison jumpsuit — so much so that a clip of former President Barack Obama from October has gone viral once again. And when Donald Trump comes across it on his Twitter feed, he’s going to freak out all over again, just like he did the day Obama said it to begin with.
Obama was speaking at a Democratic rally in advance of November’s midterm election, and he made a point that it’s impossible for Republicans to argue with: No one in his administration ever got indicted, despite near-constant rhetoric on the right of a “criminal administration” under Obama that they alleged failed to follow immigration laws, bungled the Benghazi incident, and used the IRS to target conservative groups.
They even claimed his presidency was illegitimate from the beginning because he was, according to them, born outside the United States (he wasn’t, in case the litany of debunkings weren’t enough). And these weren’t fringe claims — these are all things they wanted to impeach him for.
The clip says it all, though:
In Washington, they have racked up enough indictments to field a football team. Nobody in my administration got indicted.”
The applause the former commander-in-chief got at that line is plenty of evidence of just how exasperated Americans are with finding out just how deep the corruption in the Trump administration goes. The sooner we can be rid of this menace, the better.
