Everyone has known for months that Donald Trump would eventually do what he’s done today: Unable to negotiate for the racist border wall he desperately wants after promising it to his racist base, Trump was basically always on track to simply attempt an end-around to get the money elsewhere by declaring a “national emergency” at the border.
Likewise, everyone has known for months that the crisis was a manufactured one. From theories that the President was confusing the plot of Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado with real life to his own government’s contradictory statistics for essentially everything he claims is going on at the southern border, Trump has been on the losing end of the PR war for the wall since he started talking about it at the beginning of his campaign — except among hard-line anti-immigrant types who would prefer we rid the country of all brown people.
It’s hard, however, to catch Trump in the actual lie, since he sells the idea that he actually believes this stuff so well. It’s really the one skill he’s demonstrated as President that’s come in handy for him: He never breaks character.
Until now.
And when Trump made an accidental admission during his Rose Garden address Friday morning, it was none other than his Congressional nemesis Nancy Pelosi who called him on the carpet over it. She knows when he’s lying better than even the rest of us do — she comes in personal contact with him far more often and sees what she sees in real time, of course — and she smelled a lie like a fart in a car during Trump’s Friday address:

Uh, Mr. President… That’s actually the opposite of an emergency. A thing you don’t need to do is definitely not an emergency. You just admitted that you could have done this the right way — through Congressional approval and the correct appropriations process — but that you wanted your racist wall right now, and you’re using a loophole to lie to Americans about the necessity for it.
