The Republican Party’s response to the sexual assault allegations against Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has been nothing but atrocious. They haven’t handled the FBI’s investigation into those accusations very well, either – and that’s not going to change anytime soon.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has just made a disgusting announcement that further proves that the Republican Party will do anything to protect their own and hide their wrongs from America. McConnell, one of the most spineless Republicans of them all, has just said that the resulting report from the FBI’s investigation into Kavanaugh’s sexual assault allegations will only be shown to members of the Senate. McConnell told reporters on Capitol Hill:
We will get an FBI report soon. It will be made available to each senator and only senators will be allowed to look at it. That’s the way these reports are always handled.”
It honestly sounds like he’s terrified of what this report may contain – much like how Trump has hidden most of his own documents from America. Democrats, on the other hand, believe this report should be public knowledge considering how extraordinary the situation is. Calling for transparency, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said:
There’s a growing consensus in the Senate that when the FBI’s investigation is complete, the finding should be released publicly with any personal information redacted.”
Fortunately, not all Republicans are as cowardly as McConnell. Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), who also sits on the Judiciary Committee, is with the Democrats in stating that the report should be made public before the Senate votes on Kavanaugh’s nomination. He said:
They need to see it all. I think its contents need to be made available to the American people. I trust them to decide.”
The Republicans can’t keep hiding the skeletons in their closet – and they know it. This is just another desperate move – and it’s going to blow up in their faces.
