The Republican Party has been horrified over the past several days as Donald Trump continues to go after late Senator John McCain, unable to let the war hero rest in peace and allow his family to grieve as he continues his one-sided battle against the respected GOPer.
It’s definitely backfired on the president. Many of the top conservatives who used to defend the unworthy, unhinged POTUS are now speaking up, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. In a tweet that was posted today, McConnell defied Trump and praised McCain as a hero on social media. He wrote:
Today and every day I miss my good friend John McCain. It was a blessing to serve alongside a rare patriot and genuine American hero in the Senate. His memory continues to remind me every day that our nation is sustained by the sacrifices of heroes.”

McConnell usually doesn’t veer from Trump, so this is a start for the Republican Party. However, he shouldn’t get too much credit because he has yet to actually publicly denounce Trump’s disrespectful comments about McCain. He — and several other GOPers like Sen. Lindsay Graham — have basically turned a blind eye to Trump’s attacks on McCain even though many of them would consider themselves close friends of the late Senator.
Perhaps this is a start and Republicans will eventually muster up the courage to stand up to Trump, but in the meantime, the fact that they’re praising McCain on Twitter is a move in the right direction.
