Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) may have gone over to the dark side by becoming Trump’s constant golf buddy and one of the many Republicans who kiss the president’s orange ass, but it turns out there’s still some hope for him. Earlier today, Graham proved that even though he’s repositioned himself in the Republican Party as one of Trump’s BFFs, he’s still not afraid to rip the president a new one when he deserves it.
As a confirmation hearing for Attorney General nominee William Barr went on today, Graham surprised everyone by interrupting the hearing so he could rip Trump apart over his Syria policy. Trump was recently forced to backpedal on his claim that the Islamic Stated was defeated (and humiliated over his announced withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria), when four American service members were killed today. Reacting to this news, Graham said:
I want to make a quick statement. My concern by the statements made by President Trump is that you set in motion enthusiasm by the enemy we’re fighting, you make people who are trying to help wonder about us, and as they get bolder, the people who are trying to help are going to get more uncertain.”
Graham also cautioned Trump not to remove troops unless Syria was more stable. He said:
I saw this in Iraq, I’m now seeing it in Syria. Every American wants our troops to come home, but when they do come home, we’re safe.
Think what you want to about those people over there, they’ve had enough of killing. They would love to have the opportunity we have to fix their problems without the force of violence. I would hope the president would look long and hard where he’s headed in Syria.”
