Donald Trump has been spending more time attacking black athletes than he has actually performing his job as president. Just a few days ago, Trump got pummeled by pretty much everyone after he went after NBA player LeBron James, insulting the athlete’s intelligence after James had announced he was opening a school for at-risk youth.
James has just sent the president and anyone who dares to undermine the voices of black athletes a very strong message. The new Los Angeles Lakers star has just announced that he and his business manager, Maverick Carter, will be executive producers of a three-part documentary called “Shut Up and Dribble.” The documentary series is a direct response to Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, who told James to “shut up and dribble” earlier this year, in a call for black athletes to stop getting involved in politics. Now, James is using that phrase to troll her and any conservative who wants to quiet black voices.
“Shut Up and Dribble” will be directed by Gotham Chopra and will “look at the changing role of athletes in our fraught cultural and political environment, through the lens of the NBA.” Showtime President David Nevins said in the release:
If being a star athlete is inherently a political experience, Shut Up and Dribble tells that complex and dramatic story from the past to the present and from the inside out. LeBron James is one of many competitors whose place in the spotlight has led not to silence but perspective, and he, Maverick Carter and Gotham Chopra have given us an important, insightful docuseries that should bring their fans and fellow citizens to a higher level of discourse, rather than the dismissal satirized in the title.”
The series already sounds like it will be amazing, and couldn’t come at a more powerful time as the president and his GOP minions rage against those calling for racial justice. James’ response to these racists is brilliant and will be well supported by America’s more progressive audiences.
