On Sunday Morning, Kellyanne Conway appeared on Jake Tapper’s CNN program State of the Union to discuss the ongoing drama and political intrigue of the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
During the course of the interview, Kellyanne revealed that she, too, was a victim of sexual assault. That’s not difficult to believe in any way, and not just because it is internal policy at DC Tribune to believe women when they say they were assaulted: The odds are with her on this — one in five women in America are sexually assaulted, and Kellyanne is certainly no outlier.
Kellyanne old Jake that she felt empathy for women who are assaulted in America, but obviously she is still stuck in the mindset that women are somehow to blame for their own assaults, at least partially, because during her conversation with Tapper she continued to defend Donald Trump — in fact, admonishing Jake not to “conflate” accusations against the President with this situation — and said, disturbingly, that “you have to be responsible for your own conduct” — a noble sentiment, so long as one is not saying that being assaulted is “conduct.”
This is not Bill Cosby. Those comparisons on your network are disgrace and the anchor should have called them out. This is not even Bill Clinton.”
That was her condemnation of CNN reporters who compared the accusations against Kavanaugh to the crimes that Bill Cosby was recently sentenced to prison for. In bringing up Clinton, however, she did the same thing herself, somehow separating Cosby and Clinton from the charges leveled against Kavanaugh.
Some felt the distinction was misplaced — Clinton was impeached over lying about a consensual act, not over accusations of rape, which Kavanaugh stands accused of.
Tapper expressed his sympathy for Conway’s experience, telling her, “This is the first time I’ve ever heard you talk about something personal like that and I’m really sorry.” But as he moved on to further questions, Conway went back to her unflagging defense of Donald Trump and the interview seemed to ring hollow.
