It’s certainly no secret that Donald Trump, the very same guy that swore up and down during his 2016 presidential campaign that he would only “hire the best,” can’t even seem to keep employees, much less fill his administration with the “best” ones.
He’s constantly either giving someone the boot for whatever arbitrary reason he can come up with that day, or he’s getting yet another resignation letter from an employee that’s trying to get the hell out of that madhouse before the mere association with that administration leaves them flipping burgers for the rest of their lives.
In fact, just two days ago Donald abruptly announced on Twitter that he fired his national security advisor, John Bolton, though Bolton quickly took to his own Twitter account as well as texted into a live Fox News segment to make it very clear that Trump did not have the pleasure of firing him — he resigned.
Nevertheless, after a few former aides and Trump allies spilled the beans, and we may now know why Donald can’t keep a full staff.
According to a report from the Washington Post, employees within Trump’s White House don’t last long after breaking “the president’s sometimes Kafkaesque management style — an unusual set of demands and expectations he sets for those in his direct employ.”
WaPo states that POTUS “tolerates a modicum of dissent, so long as it remains private; expects advisers to fall in line and defend his decisions; and demands absolute fealty at all times.”
Former advisor Anthony Scaramucci told the Post “You’re there more as an annoyance to him because he has to fill some of these jobs, but you’re not there to do anything other than be backlighting. There’s one spotlight on the stage, it’s shining on Trump, and you’re a prop in the back with dim lights.”
Another Republican source close to Donald agreed with Scaramucci’s assessment, “He really doesn’t believe in advisers… John [Bolton] saw his role as advisory, but Trump thinks he’s his own adviser, and I don’t think people fully appreciate this.”
“There is no person that is part of the daily Trump decision-making process that can survive long-term,” another former senior administration official revealed. “The president doesn’t like people to get good press. He doesn’t like people to get bad press. Yet he expects everyone to be relevant and important and supportive at all times. Even if a person could do all those things, the president would grow tired of anyone in his immediate orbit.”
However, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich seemed to take the Trump version of things, blaming the ousted aides: “Anybody who thinks they’re smart enough to manipulate Trump, they’re very foolish. People mistake a willingness to eat cheeseburgers and drink Coke with being a buffoon, and he’s not a buffoon.”
When it comes down to it, he really just can’t stand the idea of anyone in the White House being smarter or better than him. And considering that boils down to pretty much everyone, it’s no surprise that his staff is just a revolving door.
