After the giant debacle at the White House on Monday, where the President of the United States thought it was somehow a good idea to serve cold fast food to a bunch of elite athletes who just won a college football national championship for the ages, many Americans were taken aback.
That sounds like a fancy word for “offended,” but offended is what we are when Trump says nasty things about immigrants or calls African nations “shithole countries.” Taken aback is more for when you just absolutely can’t believe someone would be that stupid. And from this video at the event, it sounds like even some of the players were taken aback. Listen as one of them clearly indicates that he thought the White House was kidding around:
I thought it was a joke.”
We all hoped it was. After all, these are not just a bunch of kids — they’re elite athletes who do what they do without a paycheck, hoping for just a shot at playing at the professional level. They work out constantly, they maintain a strict code of ethics, and they, uh… probably don’t eat a lot of Wendy’s.
Fortunately for these young athletes, someone at the professional level — or rather, a former professional NFL player — was just as taken aback as everyone else.
Michael Strahan, a 15-year defensive end for the New York Giants and current co-host of ABC’s Good Morning America, decided that Trump paying out of his own pocket for a bunch of cold burgers was unacceptable, and he invited the players over for a meal paid for out of his own pocket — only the good stuff this time: Lobster and caviar.
Come out here, whoever can make it. We will have lobster. Whatever you want, we gonna take care of you. We gonna give you the proper meal that you deserve, because that was one great game, a great accomplishment. We thought what we could give them. I thought lobster was great. It’s out of my pocket. I got you guys. I’ll pay for it, no problem. Those guys deserve it. Congratulations.”
