Trump is still going off about his completely made up national emergency, but a major Florida newspaper has just made sure that he’s going to have a hard time backing it up. On Sunday, the Miami Herald decided to bring attention to the REAL national emergency and threat that America is facing — gun violence.
The newspaper has published a list of the nearly 1,200 kids who have been killed by guns since the Parkland massacre, the deadliest school shooting in modern U.S. history. As Thursday marked the one year anniversary of the massacre, this couldn’t have come at a more powerful time.
The 1,157 name list took up an entire double-page spread and was categorized by incident types and counts. This included children who had been killed accidentally (154), in domestic incidents (131), homicides (744) and school shootings (25). The heading was a powerful one — the front page read:
12 months, 1,157 Deaths Since Parkland. After 17 people were killed in Parkland, parents and survivors mobilized. They called their movement Never Again. Then, it happened again.”

Gun violence is an emotional topic — as it should be. Perhaps not for Trump and Republicans, who are more concerned with the National Rifle Association and all the money they have tangled inside it, but to the rest of Americans who have souls, this struck a chord. While many of us are furious that Trump has called a national emergency over a fabricated border crisis, many Americans couldn’t help but say “*This* is the real national emergency” when they saw the Miami Herald’s paper.
*This* is the real national emergency

David Hogg, a survivor of the Parkland shooting who became a powerful activist for gun control, has also stated something similar. In an interview with CNN, Hogg said:
If we really want to start talking about the national emergency like the president likes to talk about, 40,000 Americans dying annually from gun violence is a pretty damn good one to start off with.”
The reason Hogg’s words and the Miami Herald have gotten so much attention over these statements is that it’s the truth. America has a gun problem — and the GOP continues to ignore it.
