Since Donald Trump got into the White House, we’ve seen several major GOP donors turn around and abandon the Republican Party in a particularly desperate time of need. The GOP is currently in shambles and the midterm elections aren’t looking very good. At the rate the GOP is going, 2020 is going to be a hot mess as well as they will be even more limited for funds.
Some major megadonors who have recently pulled out in the last few months include Ohio’s wealthiest Republican donor, Leslie H. Wexner and the infamous Koch Brothers, who are now donating their money to policy issues (some of which are Democratic) over choosing their own party.
One of the first megadonors to turn their back on the GOP is billionaire Mike Fernandez, who was a longtime donor until he saw just how cowardly Republicans were in regards to Trump. In the past, Fernandez had spent millions helping Republicans win elections, but all of that stopped last year after he saw how spineless his conservative colleagues really were. Fernandez told Politico:
All the Republicans who hide behind the flag and hide behind the church, they don’t have the f*cking balls to do what it takes.”
Fernandez, who was exiled from Cuba in 1964, responded to a fundraising email with even more rage:
I am out of the political process. Too disgusted, too expensive, too supportive of ego maniacs whose words have the value of quicksand. It is demoralizing to me to see adults worshiping a false idol. I can’t continue to write checks for anyone. I know what it’s like to lose a country.”
Fernandez went on to call Trump an “abortion of a human being” and said:
If I was the doctor and knew what that baby would do, I’d have made sure it never would have seen the light of day.”
Wow. If this is the attitude many Republican donors are going into the elections with, the GOP is in way more trouble than they know.
