As the Russia investigation comes to a head over the bombshell revelations that not only did Donald Trump know about and approve of the Trump Tower meeting in June 2016 between his son, his campaign manager, and a top-level Russian government lawyer seeking to have sanctions lifted in exchange for assistance in the presidential election, but that his son perjured himself before Congress about the affair, it seems like a day for reflection on what has passed so far.
There are plenty of angles to come at it from, but the easiest by far is simply to look at the constant stream of denials from literally everyone inside the administration — everyone who was asked a question as they passed in a hallway, everyone who put their face in front of a microphone, everyone who has ever been recorded on the record or off the record regarding “collusion” between Russia and the Trump 2016 presidential campaign.
But perhaps no one has been a more persistent liar on the President’s behalf than his longtime adviser Kellyanne Conway, one of just a handful of loyalist holdovers from the early days of the campaign. Despite numerous public differences with her own husband George, a Harvard-educated former federal law clerk, who often tweets in support of the President’s critics, Kellyanne has done nothing more during Trump’s entire tenure than stick to her guns.
Just a few weeks ago, Kellyanne was boasting about how Trump was going to “earn” a Nobel Peace Prize — an award she says Barack Obama was simply “given” — over his work with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un. The White House High Priestess did not mention that zero concessions have been made by Kim, and no obligations have been met.
But on Russia, Kellyanne has always struck the same tone: Nobody she knows ever did anything wrong. This old clip of George Stephanopolous showing her already-old clips of herself denying meetings ever took place, has become even more of an instant classic since the big Cohen news:
