Despite the fact that Republican Senator Lindsey Graham went off the deep end several months ago and became one of the most pathetic Donald Trump defenders in the GOP, it appears that there is still a glimpse of his former, more sane self before he jumped on the Trump bandwagon.
Earlier today, Graham shocked everyone by brutally smacking down the president’s decision to withdraw troops from Syria, calling it a “mistake.” In a rare critical statement from the Senator, he said:
An American withdrawal at this time would be a big win for ISIS, Iran, Bashar al Assad of Syria, and Russia. I fear it will lead to devastating consequences for our nation, the region, and throughout the world. It will make it more difficult to recruit future partners willing to confront radical Islam. It will also be seen by Iran and other bad actors as a sign of American weakness in the efforts to contain Iranian expansion.”
Graham’s statement is a reaction to an announcement that came earlier today when it was announced that the United States was considering total withdrawal of its forces from Syria.
It’s nice to see Graham finally flashing some of the backbone he used to have when he was one of the most vocal Trump critics the Republican Party had. Unfortunately, several months ago, the GOP Senator started to play a ton of golf with the president and got wrapped up in Trump’s nonsense with Russia, and that was the end of it.
Fortunately, it seems as though Graham still has a little bit of sanity left and can recognize when Trump needs to be told just how much his ideas suck. The president won’t listen, of course, and he’ll likely lash out at Graham for this — but at least he has one fewer person on his side.
