WH Says Treasury Secretary Will Go On Trip To Switzerland As Planned, Even Though Trump Just “Banned” Pelosi Trip Over Shutdown

The hypocrisy is astounding.

After Donald Trump’s hilarious attempt to “get back” at Nancy Pelosi after she disinvited him from giving the State of the Union address to a televised joint session of Congress, it was clear to everyone that he has no idea how government works or which branches control what aspects of governing the United States.

But shortly after his shot at “grounding” the Speaker, it became clear that he doesn’t actually care how it works, either.

Trump’s announcement of Speaker Pelosi’s trip was a violation of all security protocols imaginable. It was a bipartisan trip — Republican members of Congress were scheduled to travel with her as well — and was subject to numerous security procedures.

But then NBC’s David Gura tweeted after Press Secretary Sanders’ announcement of the President’s letter to Pelosi that perhaps, since Trump felt Pelosi’s trip (to meet with US troops and NATO allies) was inappropriate, his administration would see fit to cancel Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s trip to Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum as well.

The Davos trip, of course, is non-essential and sometimes shunned by some administrations as it is seen as nothing more than an opportunity to hobnob with rich power brokers from around the world. The Trump administration’s first experience with Davos didn’t go as well as they might have hoped, as they were met on arrival with huge signs telling them Trump was not welcome:

It seems, however, that the White House has no interest in being consistent or following any sort of logic at all, because they confirmed to Gura shortly after that Secretary Mnuchin would indeed be traveling to the ritzy event in Switzerland after all — the same trip that Mnuchin and his movie star wife Louise Linton turned into a luxury vacation last year.

That’s about in line with what we’ve come to expect from this administration.
