Donald Trump was no doubt already miffed about the fact that every year for nearly two decades when Gallup has done their annual poll of the people around the world that Americans admire the most, Hillary Clinton has topped the list among women who are named. In fact, because Mrs. Clinton has been in the public eye since her husband was President, she’s topped that poll more than any other woman on the planet — 22 times since 1993.
This year, Hillary’s streak was broken, and we don’t guess Trump will be any too happy about this selection, either. Since it’s been a President and First Lady who are named almost every year, Trump no doubt hoped that he and Melania would top the list in 2018, but in truth, the possibility of that happening was slim to none. Certainly he’s furious that his predecessor Barack Obama topped this year’s list once again — second only to Dwight Eisenhower in the number of times he’s been number one — but perhaps Melania had a chance? Not so much. It’s none other than Michelle Obama who replaced Hillary in the coveted number one spot.
Adding insult to injury, Donald and Melania have come awfully close in each of the last four years — finishing second in the poll.
It’s notable that the Obamas topped the list in a year when neither holds any position of authority. In fact, Barack Obama’s first selection to number one took place when he was merely the President-elect and has extended two extra years past the end of his time in the Oval Office. But this is the first time Michelle has taken the top spot for most admired woman, although she has been in the running before. Clinton was simply too present in American affairs — as everything from First Lady to Senator to Secretary of State — to be discounted in the past.
This is not the kind of news that Trump, who seems perilously close to a very public emotional breakdown, needs right now. It is kind of satisfying to know how much it will piss him off, though.
