Trump Boasts That More People Are Saying “God” Now Because Of Him

More like 'Oh my God.'

As Americans, we have the ability to indulge in the many rights granted to us by our Constitution. For example, the First Amendment grants us the right to freedom of speech and religion — a fundamental aspect of American independence. Considering we have implemented that right since 1791, it’s pretty safe to say that no one alive now has been in a position where the government has disallowed them from practicing their preferred religion. But Donald Trump, he feels a little differently. In fact, according to his speech at the National Day of Prayer Service today, Americans wouldn’t even be able to say the word “God” if it weren’t for him.

“One of the things that Mike [Pence] and I were discussing just a little while ago, people are so proud to be using that beautiful word, ‘God,'” Trump preached during his speech in the White House Rose Garden. “And they’re using the word ‘God’ again, and they’re not hiding from it, and they’re not being told to take it down, and they’re not saying we can’t honor God.”

As usual, Trump is patting himself on the back for an irrelevant point that he actually didn’t have shit to do with — people aren’t using the word “God” again, because they were never not allowed to say it to start with. America has never subjected the public to fearmongering over the word because that right is protected by our Constitution. It’s as simple as that.

Trump is acting as though his forerunners threw the entire nation into a state of panic around their rights to practice Christianity, and it’s utter horseshit. In fact, Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama called upon God often during his 8-year presidency.

If that wasn’t bad enough, Trump slightly shifted gears slightly and proceeded to credit himself for newfound popularity in the saying “Merry Christmas” — claiming again that no one could say it before he took office.

“Four years ago, haven’t been doing this so long, we did a good job, but when I first started campaigning people were not allowed or in some cases foolishly ashamed to be using on stores ‘Merry Christmas’ or ‘Happy Christmas,'” Trump stated. “Take a look at your stores nowadays, it’s all ‘Merry Christmas’ again.”

Again, no one has not been allowed to say “Merry Christmas” or “God” or anything else pertaining to their preferred religion since 1791. Trump deserves no praise here.
